David Carlucci

RCC Grad Youngest State Senator in New York

David Carlucci ’00, New York State Senator (D-38th district) from New City, recalls the first important elected office he held: Student Representative to the Rockland Community College Board of Trustees. Carlucci feels that the education and experience he received at RCC continue to serve him well in life and in office. “RCC is the launching pad for a successful career,” he said. “In government, business or basically anywhere you want to go, RCC can get you there.”

Carlucci began RCC as an Early Admit student in the Honors Program, and credits the level of instruction he received and the dedication of the faculty as key components in his success. “At RCC, you can develop that one-on-one relationship with faculty that you have to fight for at a university,” said Carlucci. He was inspired by Dr. Martin Lecker, Professor of Business, who then served as Director of the Business Honors Program. Dr. Lecker encouraged Carlucci to apply to Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations upon graduating from RCC in 2000. “The education at RCC was definitely of the same caliber as Cornell,” he said.

Carlucci served three terms as Clarkstown Town Clerk, holding that office from 2005 until he was elected to the State Senate in the fall of 2010, starting his first term on January 1, 2011, as the youngest NYS Senator at age 29. With his inauguration to the State Senate held on campus, Carlucci continues to demonstrate his support and relationship with RCC. He plans to offer RCC students opportunities to intern with his office, providing them with a valuable experience. As a lifelong Rockland County resident, he remains a dedicated advocate for the county and RCC.
