Why Study English?

Instruction in English focuses on clear communication in all types of writing, an activity sustained through insightful reading of both nonfiction and imaginative literature. The English Department offers courses for those who wish to pursue a degree at RCC, or to study English for personal and professional reasons. We help students write and speak effectively while thinking critically. Students may participate in writing workshops, study the works of various cultures, learn the fundamentals of journalism, study abroad, and more.

Meet our Faculty

Our distinguished faculty of over 100 full-time and 400 part-time members includes numerous published authors, Fulbright Scholars, SUNY Chancellor’s Award winners, and artists. Average class size of 22 allows faculty members to work one-on-one with students.

Types of Courses

English 101 and 102 enable individuals to transfer to a four-year institution or to enter the workforce with strong analytical and communication skills.

Literature courses help students improve their textual analysis skills as they learn about the context and evolution of fiction, poetry, and drama throughout English literary history.

Journalism courses prepare students for future study and for positions on RCC’s award-winning newspaper, Outlook.

Creative writing courses allow students to workshop their poetry, prose, plays, and creative nonfiction under the tutelage of award-winning teacher-authors.

Honors English literature seminars allow Sam Draper Honors students to partake in rigorous study of literary works organized around a particular theme. Several seminars are offered abroad.

Developmental English courses are designed to help students not yet ready for college-level coursework to improve their reading and writing skills
