Why Study Criminal Justice?

Criminal Justice, emergency preparedness, fire science and protection, and protection of our nation’s critical infrastructure are fast-growing fields. The associate’s degree in Criminal Justice provides instruction in the area of law enforcement, allowing the student to understand the workings of criminal justice system. The Corporate and Homeland Security degree is designed to provide students with the information and issues surrounding the protection of our nation’s infrastructure (energy, transportation, telecommunications, agriculture, etc.). Principles of protection, investigation, and concepts relating to industrial espionage and competitive intelligence are also explored.

The responsibility of the firefighter has been enhanced and now includes emergency medical treatment, assisting in recovery from natural disasters, managing cleanup of hazardous materials, building safety compliance, public education, and incident management. The AS degree in Fire Science Technology* is designed for those students who want to continue their education at the baccalaureate level and pursue a career in fire or emergency management. The AAS in Fire Protection Technology* is designed for students seeking immediate employment in the field of fire protection.

The AAS in Emergency Management* is a joint degree program with Ulster, Orange, and Sullivan County Community Colleges and will prepare students to react and be effective before, during and after any local, state or national emergency.

An Associate of Science (AS) degree provides a solid foundation for those who plan to transfer to a four-year college. Those who prefer to enter the workforce immediately should consider earning an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree.
