Wenshuo ZhangScience Honors Student Gets Free Ride to Doctorate

Wenshuo Zhang ’02, PhD, a graduate of RCC’s Sam Draper Honors Program, was born in northeast Mainland China and came to the U.S. at age 4. He came to RCC as an Early Admit student. He made the most of his years at RCC by studying science abroad in Cambridge and working in RCC’s microbiology lab.

Dr. Zhang said his transfer from RCC to Cornell went smoothly. “RCC had the connections in place. All I had to do was meet the academic requirements.”

Dr. Zhang earned his doctorate in Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition at the University of Chicago on a full scholarship. His career path has taken him into scientific and medical publishing, first at John Wiley & Sons, and now at Elsevier, where he is a senior web analyst.

Dr. Zhang believes starting at RCC was a smart choice. “The first two years of college are meant to give students a chance to make mistakes, learn from them, mature and consider different career paths—all without the crippling financial burden of most four-year institutions. Professors at RCC spend more time mentoring students because grants and publications are not their primary concern.”
