Peter J. Scheibner

Keeper of Rockland History, County Archivist Served for 29 Years

As Rockland County Archivist from 1987 to 2016, Peter J. Scheibner ’72 headed up a unit responsible for the maintenance and storage of active and inactive records generated by more than 50 county departments, as well as many historical records. These include deeds, mortgages, court papers, tax and assessment rolls, and a gamut of other archival materials.

Scheibner’s office completed in January 2016 a three-year project to digitize and scan all Rockland County deeds and mortgages since the county’s inception in 1798. Researchers and the general public are now able to access these records through the County Clerk’s website. His office is also involved in electronic records management efforts for court documents and other paper records.

Scheibner earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Arizona and an MA in Urban Affairs and Policy Analysis from the New School for Social Research. He lives in Stony Point with his wife, Ann, and son, Matt, a 2009 alumnus of RCC’s MgD Business Honors program and 2011 Cornell graduate.
