RAMAPO, N.Y. – Susan Oelkers-Ramos, a 14-year member of the Rockland Community College Board of Trustees, earned the Marvin A Rapp Award for Distinguished Trustee Service at the New York Community College Trustees (NYCCT) Awards Dinner on September 22 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Oelkers-Ramos, a Stony Point, N.Y. businesswoman, has tapped her extensive experience as an entrepreneur to encourage learning experiences for RCC students who wish to be part of the day-to-day operation of a small business. She has been a pivotal participant in RCC's President's Emerging Leaders Program, using her life story – born and raised in East Harlem in New York City – as an example of what any student can accomplish through hard work, dedication and unrelenting focus on their career goals.

A major benefactor to RCC, Oelkers-Ramos offers a generous source of financial backing to such College initiatives as the President's Student Support Fund, which provides vital financial support to ensure that students successfully complete their course of study. As the Board of Trustees liaison to the RCC Foundation Board of Directors, of which she is a member, her role is to make sure that Foundation resource development is aligned with the College's need for support. She also plays an integral role in helping to generate and sustain fundraising efforts.

Oelkers-Ramos owns Environmental Construction Inc. of Stony Point, which she co-founded in 1988. A pillar in the Rockland County business community for three decades, she has contributed to numerous projects benefiting the local area, including donating materials and labor by her entire 30-member staff in a $100,000 restoration at Memorial Park in Nyack, N.Y.

Oelkers-Ramos was appointed as a trustee in January 2004 and is the longest-tenured member of the RCC Board of Trustees.

“Being appointed to the Rockland Community College Board of Trustees has been a blessing,” said Oelkers-Ramos. “I am honored to be able to ensure that more help is available and more chances are offered, so that each year fewer people fall between the cracks. I hope to tell more students that no obstacle is insurmountable as long as you have faith and work hard.”
