RAMAPO, N.Y. – The Rockland Community College golf team enjoyed team and individual success during the spring 2018 season, highlighted by a second-place finish in the Mid Hudson Conference and a third-place showing in the Region XV tournament. Additionally, three Hawks golfers qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship tournament – freshman Sean McGarvey, and sophomores John Barna and Anthony Mottolese.

McGarvey, an NJCAA All-Academic third team honoree, paced the Hawks at the NJCAA tournament by finishing tied for 46th place out of 87 competitors. Barna followed in 76th place and Mottolese in 82nd. The tourney was held June 4-8 at the Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, N.Y., 40 miles south of Buffalo. McGarvey, Barna and Mottolese were joined on the All-Mid Hudson Conference team by John McGinn.

“Just to make it to nationals is very good,” says Tom Craffey, who completed his 12th year as head coach. “Sean [McGarvey] definitely has a future in golf. He was mainly a wrestler at Pearl River High School but now is concentrating on golf.”

RCC placed second in the Mid Hudson Conference regular season behind Westchester CC, but the Hawks drew a measure of revenge in the Region XV tournament, held May 23-25 at Rotella Golf Course in Haverstraw, N.Y. RCC finished third behind Nassau CC and Suffolk CC but ahead of Westchester.

“It was a successful season,” says Craffey, who believes he has the makings of another strong team next spring. “Hopefully next year we pick up a couple of kids, and then we’ll be off to the races.” Craffey coached RCC to the Region XV championship and a team berth at Nationals in 2010, and has coached two individual All-Americans, Amrit Etwaroo in 2009 and Colby Lewis in 2012. Craffey is assisted by Howie Pierson, who was the college’s longtime golf coach and athletic director, and starred on professional golf’s Seniors tour. “Howie is royalty,” says Craffey. “He’s been with me every step of the way. I couldn’t have done it without him.”
