RCC Receives National Recognition for Cybersecurity Education

Ramapo- On March 8, 2017, Rockland Community College was designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Two Year Education (CAE2Y) by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Events around the globe highlight the growing need for skilled cybersecurity experts to protect online transactions, data, and communications. Rigorous requirements to gain this prestigious designation include developing an online Center for Cyber Defense to include a wide range of information and resources for the public as well as for students. To gain greater knowledge of our critical cybersecurity need please see some of the resources included on our website, including this dynamic map of actual cyber-attacks in real-time NORSE.

Other requirements include documenting evidence of meeting additional program criteria with regard to the establishment of our Center for Cyber Defense Education and website (, mapping RCC’s AAS degree in Cyber Security curriculum to the NSA/DHS 2-Year Core Knowledge Units, Cyber Defense faculty qualifications, CAE2Y curriculum path, student development, Cyber Defense program of study, and outreach.

Rockland is just the second SUNY Community College to earn this prestigious designation, Mohawk Valley Community College was certified in 2016. RCC’s certificate will be awarded during the 9th Annual Cyber Summit, June 6-8 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Prior to earning this level of certification, the College received national recognition for mapping its Cyber Security curriculum to the Committee on National Security Systems' (CNSS) Information Assurance training standards in 2008, with recertification of the curriculum in 2013. CAE2Y is the next level of national recognition of excellence in Cyber Defense Education, and RCC is one of just 40 CAE2Y institutions in the nation at the time it received designation.

RCC graduates with an AAS in Cyber Security transfer to a range of 4-year institutions including Mercy College, Pace University, and St. John’s University. Some of our alumni have earned the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service funded through the National Science Foundation. This scholarship includes full tuition, fees and a stipend. Cyber Security courses also prepare students to enter the workforce, and help prepare them for industry-recognized certifications, including Cisco® CCNA, Microsoft® certifications, and CompTIA® A+ and Security+ and Network+ certifications.
