fourteen Hawks gain All-Region academic honors

RAMAPO – Eleven student-athletes from Rockland Community College gained recognition at the national level for their achievements in the classroom. The NJCAA, the national governing body for two-year college athletics, named the students Academic All-Americans for the 2016-17 school year.

Three of the Hawks received NJCAA All-American Second Team honors for posting a GPA between 3.8 and 3.99 this school year. Bowler Victoria Garcia, a graduate of North Rockland High School, achieved this impressive honor, along with women’s basketball players Olivia Neretich, from Minisink Valley HS, and Anna Olsson, an international student from Sweden.

The remaining RCC honorees received NJCAA Third Team recognition for a GPA between 3.6 and 3.79. This group included three members of the successful women’s volleyball team: Jessica Barragan, a Spring Valley resident who attended Hawthorne Christian Academy in New Jersey; Sara Hayward, an alumna of Suffern HS; and Shannon Thomas, a North Rockland HS graduate.

Also named to the Third Team: golfer Nick Armstrong, from Saugerties HS; baseball player Bryan Borruso, a Tappan Zee HS graduate; bowler Steven Iaccarino, a Monroe-Woodbury HS alum; tennis player Ulyana Kitcmanuk, a Spring Valley HS grad; and men’s basketball player Kevin Martinez, out of Clarkstown South HS.

Three RCC teams achieved a cumulative grade-point average over 3.0 this year, led by the volleyball team with a 3.15 GPA. The men’s tennis squad recorded a 3.08 GPA, while the golf team had a 3.02 GPA.

Academic All-Region honors announced

Fourteen student-athletes from RCC’s winter and spring sports teams also recently earned Academic All-Region honors for completing the spring semester with a 3.25 GPA or better. Included in that group were five members of the Region XV champion men’s tennis team. Kitcmanuk, who played for the men’s team after RCC could not field a women’s squad this year, was joined by two Nyack HS graduates, MacGregor Graham and Jovan Rivera, and two international students, Akinari Hotta (Japan) and Felipe Robles (Colombia).

Carl Faulcon, a Nanuet HS alumnus, joined Martinez as All-Region honorees from the RCC men’s basketball team, while Neretich and Olsson were honored from the women’s basketball squad. Joseph Latona, a grad of Moore Catholic HS in Staten Island, joined Borruso in representing the baseball team. Bowlers Garcia and Iaccarino and golfer Armstrong rounded out the All-Region selections.
