RCC Hosts Fourth Annual Super Meet & Eat

2019 Super Meet & Eat at RCC

'Speed meeting' ice breaker plus international-themed meal draws more than 100 to Student Union

DATE: March 11, 2019

RAMAPO, N.Y. – More than 100 people came to the Rockland Community College Student Union on February 21 to participate in the fourth annual Super Meet & Eat, a sort of lightning-round tête-à-tête meant to encourage face-to-face interaction, followed by a meal with international cuisine. The event was held in the college's spacious Nelson Mandela Room and presented by the following clubs: Humans of RCC, International, Japanese Language, Cyber Security, Tri-Beta, and Athletic Training.

The idea was for each participant to engage in three to five 2-minute conversations with random other participants in facing lounge chairs, then continue the conversation over delicious international-themed fare. Most of the attendees were students, sprinkled with a smattering of RCC faculty and staff. RCC President Michael A. Baston also attended for the second year and offered a brief pep talk and thanks to those who participated.

In an age when young people often find themselves absorbed in their electronic devices to the neglect of human interaction, Meet & Eat organizers hoped to break down perceived barriers and stereotypes and to foster connections among people of various cultures and walks of life. The goal was to encourage participants' receptiveness to other viewpoints by allowing them to share stories and experiences with one another. Nervous participants could utilize written questions to ask, provided by organizers, and were made to feel at ease with catchy background music from around the world. Gift cards were raffled at the conclusion of the event.

More than 25 volunteers from the sponsoring clubs helped the Meet & Eat run smoothly and successfully.
