November - December 2018 Achievements


Peter Arvanites, professor of Mathematics, made a presentation November 17 on Quantway Core at the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges Region IV Conference at Orange County Community College in Middletown, N.Y.

Collette Fournier, adjunct, Art, held an exhibition of her photographic work at the Cultural Arts Center of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, from October 31 to November 11. She presented a lecture on the exhibit on November 8 at the same location.

Mark Gomes, adjunct, Social Science, arranged a November 13 presentation at RCC by De Ray McKesson, a Black Lives Matter supporter, author, activist, podcaster and teacher. McKesson spoke to the students about political and social activism.


Jillian Decker, assistant professor of Biology, was accepted into the Ecological Society of America Data Explorers Faculty Mentoring Network for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters. It is a network of professionals who incorporate the use of data in the classroom.

Joanne Howard, adjunct, Fine Arts, provided set design for the stage production of Antigonik at the Abrons Art Center's Big Dance Theater in New York, N.Y., November 14-17.

The following students were honored at RCC's Hispanic Heritage Awards presentation on November 30 in the Faculty Dining Room:

The following student veterans earned induction into RCC's chapter of the SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society at a luncheon December 6 in the President's Conference Room: Mark Woods, Army; Nicholas Heitzmann and Christopher Sobel, Navy; Nicholas Bulson and Justin Ludwig, Marines; and Kelly McAllen, Air Force. Jordan Bogart, a 2012 RCC graduate and Marine Corps veteran, served as the alumni witness to the signature of new members.

Humberto Romero Gonzalez '19 was recognized on December 6 for having won first-place honors in the fall 2018 “Persuasive Speech” contest, coordinated by Speech professor Wilma Frank. The topic of the speech was “Make DACA Great Again.”

Joshua Howard '19 earned an Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts for building a trail at Traphagen Park in West Nyack. He completed the project on November 25 and was recognized on December 4.

Emanuel Lewis, a first-year honors student, attended the Berklee College of Music's five-week summer program and earned a scholarship of $20,000 per year for up to four years, to study at that school beginning in Fall 2018.

Morris Rosenberg, a first-year student, received his high school equivalency diploma, or GED, on November 8 from Rockland BOCES. At BOCES request, Rosenberg delivered a well-received speech at the graduation ceremony.
