October 2016 Achievements


Mike Francesco, Adjunct, Physics and Chemistry, had an article published in a recent issue of the Bergen Community College Journal of Scholarly Teaching. The article, “The Heat Seeking Flame Probe,” explains how he uses a robotics device he co-designed and built to help students understand the role of creativity and invention in science, and learn about thermodynamics and electrical/mechanical design.


Maire Liberace, Professor, Speech/Philosophy, has been selected as a member of the SUNY Distinguished Service Professorships University-Wide Advisory Council, which chooses recipients of the distinguished service professorship designation.

The NYS Small Business Development Center at RCC, led by Director Tom Morley, received SBDC and SBTDC (Technology Development Center) accreditation in September following team visits in August. This is the Center’s fifth straight accreditation without condition, the only program in the nation to hold that distinction.


Collette Fournier, adjunct in Art, recently presented her photographic work, Retrospective: Spirit of a People, at the Baobab Cultural Center (Oct 27) and the Genesee Center for the Arts and Education (Oct 29) both in Rochester NY. Additional shows will be at the RCC Ellipse on Sunday, November 20 from 1-3 pm, and at the CEJJES Institute in Pomona, Sunday, December 11 from 3-5 pm.

Dr. Katie Lynch, Assistant Professor, English, participated on a panel titled "Lesbian Fiction: The Best Kept Secret" at the Jefferson Market branch of the New York Public Library in NYC on September 20. Dr. Lynch read from her recently published book, Confucius Jane.

Eileen MacAvery Kane, instructor, Art, exhibited her work, Movement in Nature, at Storm King Tavern, Cornwall NY (October 2016). Her short documentary film, The Ghosts We Live With, premiered October 29-30 at the Downing Film Center, Newburgh, NY, with an additional screening scheduled for Friday, November 11 @ 7:30 pm, Monroe Arts and Civic Center, Monroe NY.

Tom Morley, Director, NYS Small Business Development Center at RCC, presented at the national association of SBDCs annual conference Sept. 19-22 in Orlando, Florida. His theme was strategic planning methodologies for college- and university-based programs.

John Schlesinger, Associate Professor of Art, in a collaboration with Tra Bouscaren, is opening at the ‘Unsmoke'  gallery just outside of Pittsburgh, in Braddock, Pennsylvania. The opening is Saturday, November 19 from 6-10 pm. See more about the show

Student & Alumni Achievements

Febin Bellamy '15, recently created the inspiring Unsung Heroes campaign,  featured recently on many prominent news media including: Washington Post cover story, NBC Nightly News, BBC News, HLN/CNN, NBC Washington, WGN TV News, Huffington Post, and the Chicago Tribune. Currently a senior in the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, Bellamy's initiative went viral through social media to raise funds and promote awareness and appreciation for the life stories and aspirations of the many behind the scenes workers like janitors and cafeteria workers who keep college campuses running. Tom McNamara ’85 was promoted to Special Assistant to the General Manager of the Seattle Mariners major league baseball team in September 2016. McNamara had been Director of Amateur Scouting for the ball club since November 2008.

Shannon Thomas ’18, a freshman women’s volleyball player, was named Mid-Hudson Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of October 10-16. She led the Hawks with 62 kills, 40 digs and 9 solo blocks over 12 sets.

Roxanne Watson, RCC alumna and current Hospitality student, was the winner of the professional digital media 2016 Eddie Award for her article, "What A Silent Heart Attack Sounds Like," in the Spring issue of the American Heart Association’s Heart Insight Magazine.
