June 2016 Achievements


Maire Liberace, Professor of Speech/Philosophy, had two poems published in the May issue of the poetry anthology A New Ulster, in both digital and print formats. Her new book of poetry, Walking on Water, is scheduled for publication (Clachan Publishing) in late June.


RCC has been recognized as one of the top five community colleges for number of students admitted to Binghamton University, SUNY.

Campus Communications earned the Judge's Citation Award from the SUNY Council for University Advancement (CUAD) in the Recruitment Brochure category for the general recruitment brochure, "Rockland Community College: The Smart Choice!" Tzipora Reitman, Director of Communications and Collette Fournier, Communications Assistant, were recognized. The award was presented at the SUNY CUAD conference in Cooperstown, June 8-10.


Michael Albin, Coordinator of Academic Advisement, received the Leadership Award and Nadine Bristow-Haynes, Career Services, received the College & Community Service Award at the Administration & Staff Assembly Employee Recognition Ceremony on May 19.

Susan Deer, PhD, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs & Student Services, earned the 2016 American Council of Education Women's Networking Catalyst Award. The award is presented at the NY State Convention, June 24, at Schenectady Community College.

Sara Macel, Art adjunct, was interviewed by The Huffington Post’s Art & Culture section for a feature on its online blog, “Doin Work, Flash Interviews with Contemporary Photographers.”


Debra Bouabidi, Director of Financial Aid, was a panelist in a New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association (NYSFAAA) webinar about the new Early FAFSA application process, which will begin October 1, 2016.

Janice T. Goldstein, Director, Multi-Media Production Center, served on a panel for the Non-Traditional Job Readiness Forum, hosted by RCC Career Services and held at Suffern High School.

Wendy Gordon, Interim Chair and Instructor, Hospitality & Tourism and Dr. Sherrill Wilson, adjunct faculty, along with RCC Hospitality students, gave an Asian Fusion food presentation and tasting at the Mahwah Public Library in Mahwah, NJ.

Catherine Roche, Professor and Division Chair, Business and Professional/Public Service, served as a panelist for “Creating a Global Learning Environment with COIL,” at the SUNY Conference on Instruction and Technology (CIT) at SUNY Potsdam on May 29.

Elaine Toia, PhD, Professor, English, presented her paper, "The Price of Spectatorship in The House of Mirth and The Wings of the Dove," at the Edith Wharton Society Conference held June 2-4 in Washington, DC.

Exhibited / Performed

Bobby Deitch, adjunct, music, took to the stage to play drums with the popular band Lettuce, performing for an audience of about 10,000 on June 10, at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, Colorado. His son, Adam Deitch, is the band's regular drummer and also a member of Break Science and Pretty Lights Live Band.

Eileen MacAvery Kane, Instructor, Art, will exhibit two works at the Lightbulb Project 2016 in Newburgh NY. Area artists design and build fanciful 4-feet tall fabricated ‘lightbulbs,’ for community display in the Newburgh Waterfront Park and culminating in a charitable fund-raising Finale and Auction on July 10.

Angelo Parra, adjunct faculty, Performing Arts and English, recently made two adult education program presentations at the Tappan Library: The Evolution of the Broadway Musical and How to Write a Play.

Student Achievements

Thirty-two student athletes from RCC’s Baseball, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Bowling, Golf and Women’s Basketball teams were named to the Mid-Hudson Conference Honor Roll for Spring 2016.
